Jamie Carragher has stuck the boot into Liverpool following Brendan Rodgers’ sacking, saying that his former club haven’t been good enough in recent years and that they over-estimate their position in world football.
Rodgers was removed from his position as Liverpool’s manager on Sunday following the club’s 1-1 draw against rivals Everton, with many speculating that such an unexpected move is likely due to Liverpool having their sights set on another manager to take the helm at the club. However, former Liverpool player and pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool have a higher opinion of themselves than is warranted by their performances, telling Sky Sports: “Liverpool have won one Carling Cup in 10 years. Liverpool are becoming Tottenham. They think they are a big club but the real big clubs are not too worried about them. That is the situation for Liverpool. I’m not just blaming Brendan Rodgers, it was the situation when I was there.”
Carragher also said that Liverpool’s decision to sack Rodgers wasn’t unjustified, saying: “Brendan Rodgers can’t argue in some ways. He has been there three and a bit years and he hasn’t won a trophy and has played Champions League football once – that isn’t good enough for Liverpool.”
He continued: “You’ve lost those players, but they’ve reinvested the money. I don’t think Brendan Rodgers can say he hasn’t had money to spend. Nearly £300m. None of those players have kicked on. This situation they found themselves in now, it isn’t just Brendan, it was going on when I was there.”

Liverpool currently sit in tenth place in the Premier League, with many believing that Rodgers may have been swiftly removed from his post due to comments made by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho following his club’s 3-1 defeat to Southampton. Speaking after the match, Mourinho addressed the criticisms lobbed in his direction by telling reporters that if the club no longer wanted him as manager, they would have to sack him. This has led many to consider whether Liverpool removed Rodgers before Chelsea potentially fired Mourinho, so that they would have first choice when it came to hiring a new manager.
Liverpool have stated that former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp is their first choice to replace Rodgers, with ex-Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti also in contention. No deal has been proposed to either manager at the time of this writing.
