Michael Sam Says He Would Still Be On NFL Roster If He Stayed In Closet

Michael Sam is now saying that he would still be on an NFL roster if he hadn’t come out of the closet.

The former Mizzou defensive end spoke about his frustrations on the Dan Patrick radio show on Friday.

“It probably would have been better for me if I didn’t come out … I would be on a roster,” Sam said, who added he came out earlier than he wanted because the media covering Missouri football already knew and he wanted to tell his own story.

Sam was drafted in the last round by the St. Louis Rams last year before rumors suggested the team felt pressure from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to draft him because of his homosexuality. However, Sam was cut near the end of training camp. He then signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a practice squad member and was released before signing with the Canadian Football League where he only stayed a short time before leaving for “mental health” reasons

Sam is back at Mizzou getting his master’s degree and is interested in pursuing broadcasting.
