In 1983, Stephen J. Cannell and Frank Lupo’s The A-Team made its debut on NBC and quickly became one of the network’s iconic action series before finishing its run after five seasons. Twenty two years later, The A-Team is coming back to television.
Deadline is reporting that Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious) and Tawnia McKiernan (a TV director and the daughter of Cannell) are producing “a new contemporary take” on The A-Team for 20th Century Fox TV. Sleepy Hollow executive producer Albert Kim is writing the modern reboot of The A-Team, which will maintain the premise of special forces operatives who are accused of a crime they didn’t commit before going on the run as soldiers of fortune who help those in need. The new A-Team will largely be a “mission-of-the-week-show,” with an emphasis on action, “inventive cons and lots of humor.”
The biggest difference this time is that The A-Team will be comprised of men and women. On the original A-Team series, reporters Amy Amanda Allen (Melinda Culea) and Tawnia Baker (Marla Heasley) were allies of the team but never members. And plans to bring in Tia Carrere as the fifth member of the team never came to fruition.
George Peppard, Dirk Benedict, Dwight Schultz, and Mr. T headlined the original version of The A-Team. In 2010, the feature film version of The A-Team cast Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in the leading roles.
The A-Team doesn’t currently have a network home, but 20th Century Fox is expected to shop it around.
