What happens when your crew leaves you stranded on Mars? That’s what happens to Matt Damon in the new Ridley Scott flick The Martian explores, and the plot was discussed in a panel group that included members of NASA at TIFF recently. Meanwhile, Arcade Fire’s The Reflektor Tapes, is getting mixed reviews from critics.
The Martian, starring Damon as well as Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig, comes out in theatres on October 2nd. “We wanted to make it as scientifically accurate as possible, without dumbing it down,” said screenwriter Drew Goddard (Digital Journal).
The Reflektor Tapes, one of the several documentary films being screened as part of TIFF’s Docs, “Anyone looking for some deep insight into the band Arcade Fire from The Reflektor Tapes will be greatly disappointed. That being said, fans of the band will still enjoy this film that is more an art installation piece than a documentary. Shot by music video director Kahlil Joseph, the film mixes footage of Arcade Fire’s last tour with scenes from the vibrant streets of Haiti, where the album Reflektor was recorded. Occasionally there are snippets from interviews with band members that give the images some context, but there’s not much attempt at a narrative” (Dork Shelf). Meanwhile, Billboard added, “The film shows exactly that – from massive crowds to the isolation of the recording studio – while also touching on the fun, culturally rich influence of Haitian festival music, known as rara (singer Régine Chassange’s parents and grandmother were born on the Caribbean island).” The doc will screen again on Friday, September 18th as part of the TIFF Docs Programme.
TIFF runs until September 20th. For a few schedule click here.
