The 40th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is in full swing, with big flicks and big Hollywood heavyweights leaving their mark in TO – from Netflix premiered its first major film project Beasts of No Nation to celebs like Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, and Michael Moore walking the red carpet, there’s no shortage of star power in downtown TO.
Netflix showed off their anticipated movie venture Beasts of No Nation, which follows a young African boy after his parents are killed as he is forced to become a child soldier in a rebel army led by a brutal commandant (Idris Elba, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom). The film is an adaptation of the acclaimed book by Nigerian-American author Uzodinma Iweala.
Meanwhile, Matt Damon’s The Martian was screened, and Moore’s documentary Where to Invade Next was shown (he jokingly told The Star, “I enjoy it every time I come here…fix the traffic”).
Saturday featured a live read of the hit 80s movie The Princess Bride, complete with Cary Elwes surprising and delighting fans as he read for the part of Wesley, and Rachel McAdams took a (successful) stab at Buttercup (and other roles along the way). That evening Clooney joined gal pal Bullock to support her latest project, Our Brand In Crisis, which he co-produced.
Also this weekend Sicario starring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin, debuted. And on Sunday Susan Sarandon was honoured at the Artists for Peace and Justice Festival Gala.
