Back in January, a remake of the British TV series Black Mirror was shopped around to American networks. But why settle for the remake when you can have the original?
Radio Times is reporting that new episodes of Black Mirror are coming to Netflix. The series was created by Charlie Brooker in 2011 for Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. Black Mirror has been described as a modern day Twilight Zone because of its anthology format and its darkly cynical sense of humor as it examines the bleaker side of modern and future technology.
Only seven episodes of Black Mirror have been produced over two seasons, but the series has amassed a large cult following in North America since its debut on Netflix in December 2014. Robert Downey Jr. has also optioned the Black Mirror episode “The Entire History of You” as a stand alone feature film.
Brooker is said to be currently writing a new season of Black Mirror, which will likely remain on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. No date for the new episodes has been revealed.

The intriguing thing about this report is that the previously mentioned American remake of Black Mirror was being pushed by Endemol Shine North America as a precursor towards Endemol’s proposed stand alone streaming service. Perhaps the already large audience served by Netflix proved to be a more attractive deal.
There is also the possibility that the backing of Netflix could allow an even larger casting pool for the new episodes of Black Mirror. Since the series has no standing cast, it’s not out of the question that Netflix could borrow from HBO’s playbook and put movie stars into Black Mirror as a casting stunt.
