The triple j text-line is where listeners can request songs, react to on-air shenanigans or just voice their opinions, but it’s also where some people accidentally send strange (and even sexual) messages to a bloke from Queensland called Kevin, now affectionately known as ‘Same Number Kev’.
Triple j’s Veronica Milsom and Lewis Hobba have managed to track down Same Number Kev to see just how disruptive triple j listeners’ text-line messages have been for him. As it turns out, receiving random and often super-weird texts from strangers can really mess with your love life.
Same Number Kev’s phone number is reportedly only one digit different to triple j‘s text-line, leading to some pretty confusing moments for our virtual mate.
“I was married long ago (key word here is ‘was’ – woohoo!) my succubus ex-wife was convinced these texts were coming from a mistress or girlfriend, so that was awkward,” Kev says.
“Girlfriends since then have also thought it weird that I receive numerous texts at random times that I sometimes answer.”
Love life mishaps aside, Kev has shed some light on the best texts he has ever accidentally received, and it sounds like he’s actually enjoyed a few of them.
“I guess it depends on how you define ‘best’,” Kev says. “The one where the girls in Western Australia sent me a tittie pic was good – I wonder if Nikki ever got that other nipple pierced.
“I’ve had a bloke a little too interested in me, the memory is hazy on that one, probably an automatic ego defence mechanism but he wouldn’t stop asking questions about me. I’ve had a couple of girls get chatty too so hopefully that balances things out.”
Kev says he works in the emergency response field at a major construction project, so although he’s not a triple j listener, he could have some advice for the broadcaster about how to deal with tricky situations, especially after triple j’s very own Matt Okine “accidentally” liked this Justine Schofield bikini pic.
Same Number Kev has reportedly given triple j long lists of messages sent between him and listeners mistaking his number for the text-line, and some of Kev’s responses supposedly see him having fun with punters by playing with their heads.
Let’s hope triple j do the right thing and release some of Kev’s best text-line moments. You can catch Kev’s recent interview with triple j, below, and his full Q&A over at the triple j website.
