Back in 2002, director Barry Sonnenfeld worked closely with Daniel Handler (a.k.a. Lemony Snicket) on the feature film adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Sonnenfeld even got Jim Carrey to star in the movie, but he left the project over budget concerns and Brad Silberling stepped in to direct the 2004 movie.
However, Variety is reporting that Sonnenfeld will get another opportunity to revisit Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Netflix has hired Sonnenfeld to direct the pilot episode of the new A Series of Unfortunate Events original series. Sonnenfeld will also executive produce the series with Mark Hudis (True Blood, Nurse Jackie), who wrote the initial script and serves as the showunner.
Sonnenfeld is best known for directing all three Men in Black movies and the two Addams Family films from the ‘90s. On television, Sonnenfeld has directed the first two episodes of Pushing Daisies, the Beverly Hills Cop pilot at CBS, and the unreleased pilot for Suburban Shootout.

A Series of Unfortunate Events was a 13 part novel series which was first published in 1999. It followed the misadventures of the Baudelaire children: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny as they attempted to survive the constant intrusions on their lives by their distant relative Count Olaf, a murderous man who craves their family’s fortune.
Netflix has not set a timeline in place for A Series of Unfortunate Events to begin production. But with a writer and a director in place, casting should begin soon.
