In the Marvel comic books, the Civil War storyline – which ran in 2006 and 2007 – Captain America and Iron Man came to blows over a government-sponsored superhero registration act that would force superheroes to reveal their secret identities to the world. The notion of the alter ego is so central to modern superhero lore, that readers began to take it for granted, and Marvel decided to daringly address the very fundamental idea.
The upcoming superhero flick Captain America: Civil War, the 13th film in the undying Avengers series, will also feature a battle between the good Captain and Iron Man, although the subject of their fight has not yet been made clear (there are no secret identities in the Avengers series, unless you count Daredevil). On Twitter yesterday, actor Jeremy Renner, who plays the non-superpowered Avenger Hawkeye, tweeted some of the first concept art for Civil War, which clearly depict how loyalties will be divided.

For those who don’t recognize every character, that would be Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), The Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), The Vision (Paul Bettany), and The Iron Patriot/War Machine (Don Cheadle) vs. Captain America (Chris Evans), The Falcon (Anothony Mackie), The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Hawkeye (Renner), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp).
This film looks to be the climactic “phase” denouement that Avengers: Age of Ultron wasn’t. Let’s hope for something more than a lot of punching and zapping.
