As Hell on Wheels enters the penultimate episode of the first half of season 5, it’s become clear that Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount)’s folly was that he didn’t realize just how deadly Chang (Byron Mann) could be.
Chang successfully deflected Bohannon’s attention to The Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl), a man that Bohannon has very good reasons to hate. But Chang wants his demands to be met at all times…and towards that end, he orchestrated the murder of Tao (Tzi Ma), one of the few Chinese immigrant Central Pacific Railroad workers who can speak English.
Tao had demonstrated an ability to defuse the tension between the Chinese workers and the other factions surrounding the Central Pacific Railroad. Eliminating Tao was simply a way for Chang to ensure that Bohannon needs his support…and it was a demonstration that he can inflame the racial conflicts at any time that he chooses.
In CraveOnline’s exclusive preview scene from this week’s Hell on Wheels, Bohannon accompanies Tao’s daughter, Mei (Angela Zhou) as they attempt to cross a river with their horses. And let’s just say that Bohannon has had much better plans in the past…
