PlayStation Plus subscription fees are set to rise in the UK, with Sony potentially altering the prices of their online service in the US, too.
While the price of a one year subscription will remain the same at £39.99, the monthly fee of £5.49 will rise to £5.99 while the three-month fee will increase dramatically, leaping from £11.99 to £14.99. Sony has yet to make an announcement regarding whether or not this will impact other regions, or will be limited to the UK.
This news comes after the company stated that they were “listening” to PlayStation owners who started the #BetterPSN campaign, calling for improvements to be made to the service including less disruptive maintenance, dedicated servers and enhanced user profiles. It’s unknown whether any of these changes in the pipeline, but right now the only change Sony has made to the service is “hike up its price.”
A quote from Sony via TechRadar reads: “We are dedicated to bringing PlayStation Plus members the best possible service with the most compelling content.
“From 1st September 2015 we will be increasing the price of monthly and three month PlayStation Plus subscriptions in line with market conditions. We will continue to invest in PS Plus to ensure an unparalleled experience, featuring the best quality games and features.”
Sony stated that the price of PS Plus being raised in other European countries was due to the value of the euro dipping, but considering the UK’s currency is pound sterling, the reasoning behind this price raise is seemingly “because they can.”
It’s hardly a huge rise in the price of the service unless you’re committed to sticking to your three-month plan, but it does feel as though such a price hike should coincide with improvements, such as better servers and a more reliable network. With PSN frequently facing downtime and always running over schedule when it comes to breaks for maintenance, even a minor hike in the cost of the subscription fee could leave a sour taste in the mouths of PlayStation owners.
