Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry Posts Brave Message in the Face of Online Rape Threats

Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry has posted a powerful retort to a rape threat she received online, proclaiming that “women will not be silenced and shamed and made to disappear.”

Lauren posted a tweet revealing an example of the online threats she receives as a result of being a woman in the public eye, accompanied by her own message. The vile threat, which you can see below, was seemingly posted to Lauren via Instagram.

In response, Lauren wrote:

“My band is lucky enough to have some of the most awesome, supportive and respectful fans in the world and we are so excited to be in the studio making an album to share with them. Yet, on a daily basis, we still receive communications like this. These people never learn that violence against women is unacceptable. But they also never learn that women will not be shamed and silenced and made to disappear. I am not going anywhere. So bring it on, motherfuckers. Let’s see who blinks first.”

The Scottish singer previously penned a blog post for the Guardian in which she detailed the misogynistic comments she regularly receives, writing: “I am incredibly lucky to be doing the job I am doing at the moment – and painfully aware of the fact that I would not be able to make music for a living without people on the internet caring about our band. But does that mean that I need to accept that it’s OK for people to make comments like this, because that’s how women in my position are spoken to?”

Lauren’s brave push back against these threats is commendable, given that even acknowledging the idiotic is enough to make them continue their attempt to bully her into submission. Being such a vocal opponent of this level of violent misogyny is not something many could do, and that is fine, but Lauren showing these twisted, hateful individuals that “enough is enough” is admirable. As if we needed any more reason to love Chvrches.
