Andros Townsend Says He’s “Silenced Critics” After England Goal

When Roy Hodgson called up Andros Townsend to the England squad, his decision was widely criticised. Townsend hadn’t exactly been on a good run of form for Tottenham, and many questioned why he had made it into the squad ahead of the likes of Ashley Young. During England’s friendly against Italy yesterday, Townsend made a statement by equalising for the team, with him now admitting that he has pleased he has managed to silence a few of his critics.

Speaking after the match, Townsend said: “It was really nice. It’s no secret there’s been criticism of my call-up to squad – as usual – but every time I’ve put on an England shirt I’ve always done myself justice.

“That’s my third goal in seven caps and it was really important to come on and silence a few critics. I’ve done that, and I’m proud of my personal performance.

“I’ve been thinking about (the criticism) all week – I was desperate to get on that pitch and silence a few critics, and as soon as the goal went in I was thinking about all the people saying I should be nowhere near the squad.

“Hopefully that can keep them quiet for a few months, and hopefully they can realise the quality I bring to this England squad.”

Former England player and Arsenal legend Paul Merson was one of Townsend’s most vocal critics following his call-up, with the ex-player saying: “If Townsend can get in then it opens it up for anybody.” Though the goal only took place in an inconsequential friendly, it will have certainly bolstered Townsend’s confidence and will have convinced many that he may have what it takes to perform for England on the international stage.

Following England and Italy’s 1-1 draw, Townsend sent a tweet to Merson, writing: “Not bad for a player that should be ‘nowhere near the squad’ ay?”
