No, Luis Suarez Hasn’t Bit Another Player

Allegations that Luis Suarez sunk his teeth into Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis were circulating the internet yesterday, though new video footage has confirmed that this wasn’t the case.

Suarez has a history of biting rival players on the pitch, with the most infamous case taking place in Uruguay and Italy’s World Cup 2014 group match, in which he nibbled upon Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder. He received a nine-month ban from football for the attack, though this didn’t prevent him from being swooped up by Barcelona from his former club Liverpool.

Suarez faced his former Premier League rivals City in the last leg of their Champions League tie-up, but shaky footage appeared to indicate that the striker had attempted to take a chunk out of Demichelis’ hand during the game. However, the below video footage proves that this wasn’t the case:

While I’m always keen to criticise Suarez whenever possible given that he’s a racist thug, in this instance he is clearly innocent. The speculation was also addressed by Manchester City, with an official club statement reading: “The incident was not discussed by Demichelis or anyone else at City after the game, indicating the defender had no sense of grievance.”

Defending Suarez makes me feel dirty, but clearly he did no wrong in his club’s 2-1 last 16 first leg. Considering the last time he bit a player was all the way back in June of last year, though, I can imagine he’s itching to gnaw on the flesh of another rival, so it can only be a matter of time before he sinks his teeth into a fellow La Liga player.
