CES 2015: New Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Announced, Currently Only Confirmed for PS4

It has finally happened. The long rumored new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game is official, and coming to a store near you sooner than you might imagine.

Sony announced at its CES 2015 keynote that a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game is in the works. Made better, the presenter shared that it’s farther in development than anticipated, with an estimated release window of “later this year”. That’s right, Tony Hawk is making a re-entry in 2015.

No details regarding the game were shared other than its title will include “TH”. So, it appears that it may be called THPS, possibly with a sub-title.

While the new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater title was announced by Sony, there was no indication that it would be console exclusive. Instead, Sony only shared that itwill come to the PS4. Given that the IP is owned by Activision, there’s no reason to think that it’ll be anything other than multiplatform.

Early Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater installments garnered overwhelming acclaim, with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 holding one of the highest review averages in gaming history. Although the series has experienced critical success, it has faded from popularity as time has gone on. There have been 15 games released in the series since the debut of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 in 2001, nearly all of which have fallen well short of expectations. The latest console entry, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, is considered a poor remake of the original title. Before that Tony Hawk: Shred tried to capitalize on the mainstream popularity of peripheral-based titles like Guitar Hero with a skateboard peripheral of its own, but failed both critically and commercially.

As a skateboarder I hope that the developer of the next installment takes some hints from EA’s Skate franchise. While it’s had issues of its own, its analog stick gameplay is the new status quo for skateboarding games. If the next Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater title is traditional, it may have its work cut out for it.
