FBI Has Officially Begun Investigating Lizard Squad, the Group Who Took Down PSN and XBL

If you’ve been unable to utilize some of the online features of your console this last week, chances are it’s because both services have been under attack. A group that goes by the moniker Lizard Squad has been actively DDoSing PSN and Xbox Live, and it’s had a major impact. Thousands of new PS4 and Xbox One owners have been able to connect to the server for updates, online gameplay, and more, causing widespread frustration at the worst time imaginable.

Up to this point the situation has been a case of “deal with it”, as Lizard Squad’s members have been able to successfully bombard their targets with relative ease, and no fear of retaliation. However, the level of impact felt by Sony and Microsoft by lost income and frustrated customers has grown to a level that it’s become a significant crime. Now, the FBI is on-board.

Speaking to GamesBeat, an FBI spokesperson shared the following regarding Lizard Squad’s actions:

The FBI is investigating the matter. Given the pending nature of the case, we cannot comment further.

Although the losses are difficult to calculate given the type of issue, it’s reasonable to think that millions of dollars of potential income has been lost due to consumers being able to visit the online store and complete orders. Additionally, mind share has affected for those who have been experiencing the next generation of consoles for their first time. As the damage of the attacks has accumulated, so has the potential for a big case against Lizard Squad’s members. It’s now at a point where it would be deemed a criminal case, with prison sentences and significant fines waiting for any members who are caught.

Lizard Squad has shown pride in its work, regularly posting inflammatory updates on Twitter and debuting a new consumer grade DDoS software package available for purchase. It’s even made a joke about the FBI investigation.

It won’t be easy to triangulate the position of Lizard Squad’s members, and some of them probably don’t even live in the United States, but if they’re caught they can kiss their freedom goodbye.
