Amir Khan: “I Want to Fight Floyd Mayweather, Then Manny Pacquiao”

Amir Khan saw off Devon Alexander in a unanimous points decision in Las Vegas over the weekend, and he has now revealed that he wants to take on Floyd Mayweather Jr. before setting his sights on Manny Pacquiao and Kell Brook.

While Mayweather is adamant that his next bout should be against Pacquiao, which will be the biggest money-maker in the sport’s history if it ever takes place, Khan believes that he should be next in line to face the five-division world champion, who remains undefeated as a professional.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Khan said: “I think the fight (with Mayweather) now has to be touching distance away. I have proven in the boxing world and in the 147-pound division how good Amir Khan is. I really belong with the top guys and it’s all about getting that big superfight.

“I really believe I have the style to give Floyd the biggest problems. Floyd has never fought anyone as quick as me and someone who is quicker than him so, yeah, I definitely want the fight.

“I think Floyd knows that as well and he will think it’ll be a tough fight for him and I will cause him problems. That could be why the fight hasn’t happened.”

Khan defeated Alexander by a wide margin on Saturday, December 13th, besting his opponent by 119-109, 118-110, and 120-108. While he remains adamant that he should be in line for a title shot against the unstoppable Mayweather, many expect that the big-money fight between the champion and Pacquaio may mean that the British boxer will never get the chance to go one-on-one with the American.

Khan also acknowledges that many wish for him to take on Kell Brook in the immediate future, though the 28-year-old insists that he is in “no rush” for that to happen. “I know it’s a fight the British public want but at the moment I want the big names like Mayweather and Pacquiao”, he said. “Me and Kell have long careers ahead of us so no need to rush it and that fight will be there maybe at the end of the year.”

Though Khan has certainly proven that he deserves a shot at Mayweather, it’s likely that promoters will overlook him in favour of Pacquiao, a fight that is predicted to pull in record-breaking money. Mayweather has stated on multiple occasions that he has his sights set on the PacMan, and it’s a dream match for many boxing fans. Whether Khan gets his shot afterwards remains to be seen.
