Final Fantasy XIV Expansion Coming Spring 2015, Called Heavensward

The first expansion to Final Fantasy XIV was just announced at a Fan Festival in Las Vegas. It’s called Heavensward, and it’s looking to usher substantial additions and improvements to what has become one of an extremely limited number of successful subscription-based MMOs of the modern era.

Heavensward‘s main focus will be on the battle between Ishgard, a city-state located in the snowy fields of Coerthas, and Dravania, a previously inaccessible region northwest of Coerthas. An emphasis will be placed on the Dragonsong War, one where Dragoons and Dragons battle fiercely. Instead of the more human dominated antagonist roster of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward will have a variety of dragons to battle. One of them can be seen in the official art (see above).

Among the additions Heavensward will bring is a level cap increase from 50 to 60, which will be accompanied by new areas to level in. These areas are said to be much larger and exploration-inviting than the zones of A Realm Reborn.

There will also be a new race added. Viangaa was teased, and two genders are confirmed. New jobs will be included as well outside of the previously defined Thief/Ninja additions. Made better, new primals will make their way into the game, one of which is brand-new for the Final Fantasy franchise.

Surprisingly, Square Enix will be adding Airships to the game which can be player-built using Free Company resources. Several options will be available to define their structure, similar to player-housing.

Unbelievably, it doesn’t end there. You will be able to visit floating islands in the sky, and there will even be Chocobo forests.

As you might suspect, there will be new dungeons, high-end raids, gear, recipes, and more.

In a nutshell, Heavensward is a massive expansion pack. It will debut in Spring 2015 on PC, PS4, and PS3 at an unconfirmed price point.

More information will be revealed on Saturday, October 25th (my birthday!) from a livestream hosted in London. In the meantime, below you can view the teaser trailer.
