Nintendo has confirmed that the Wii U GameCube controller adapter will only be compatible with the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Wii U, despite reports to the contrary.
There was some confusion surrounding whether or not the GameCube controller adapter, which will allow up to four GameCube controllers to be plugged into the Wii U, would support other Wii U software.

However, in a statement released to GameSpot, the company has revealed that will not be the case. The statement reads: “The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically – it is not compatible with any other Wii U software.
“The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion.”
Those who hoped that the adapter would allow them to play games such as Mario Kart 8 using the GameCube will be disappointed, though Nintendo likely doesn’t want another reason to make its GamePad seem redundant. There are already a variety of controller options for the Wii U, what with the GamePad, Pro controller and functionality with Wii Motion Plus/numchuks, so Nintendo may have felt that adding another into the mix would confuse consumers.
The GameCube controller adapter is set to launch alongside Super Smash Bros. Wii U‘s November 21st release date, with a bundle being made available that will include the game, an adapter and a Smash Bros. themed GameCube controller.
