Louis van Gaal has insisted that he was “not shocked” by Manchester United’s humiliating 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat to MK Dons, which continues his losing streak since taking over the club.
The League One side demolished the former Premier League champions, serving as confirmation (if Van Gaal needed any) that the Belgian manager has a great deal of work ahead of him if he’s to overhaul the ailing squad.

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Van Gaal said: “I am not shocked because I know what can happen. A new team is not built in one month.
“I also think Milton Keynes played very well, very aggressively and they had a little bit of luck with the goals.”
Manchester United have yet to win a game since Van Gaal took over from the much-maligned David Moyes, who must be laughing at the United fans who vilified him as the reasoning behind the club’s post-Alex Ferguson demise. If it wasn’t already clear, it’ll take more than a great manager to get this club back to their winning ways.
Speaking of the reasoning behind his team’s disastrous 4-0 loss, Van Gaal continued: “We made too many errors. I have no regrets about my selection but the changes were risky.
“I changed the way we played in the first half. We played one versus one over the whole pitch and when you see that. we created a lot of chances, but we were not lucky.”
Van Gaal has made some moves to improving the club, after spending £131.7 million in this transfer window and signing a record-breaking £59.7 million deal to bring Angel di Maria over from Real Madrid. While Di Maria is undoubtedly a good signing considering his pedigree, it’s questionable just how lucrative the deal will prove to be.
Meanwhile, MK Dons is celebrating the club’s biggest victory ever, with boss Karl Robinson saying: “I’m shocked. I know everyone is going to write about Manchester United and I think that’s a bit unfair.
“I’ll be honest – in the second half I felt comfortable. We came to play football and play the right way, the way we want to play. We’re a football club that is going places.”
