The much-anticipated “shocking” Pokemon announcement that Nintendo had in store for us has been revealed to be Pokkén Tournament, a fighting game developed by Tekken creator Namco Bandai.
The fighting game, which has only been announced for an arcade release, will see Pokemon go one-on-one in a 3D brawler that appears to share some similarities with Namco’s premier fighting series, which is not limited to its incredibly familiar logo:
It has been revealed that Pokkén Tournament will be making its way to Japanese arcades in 2015, with there being no word on a console or Western release. We can but hope that this game will come to the Wii U.

The short demo that was revealed during a live stream of the announcement depicted Lucario and Gen-1 Pokemon Machamp going toe-to-toe, so it seems as though the game’s roster will span across all of the Pokemon games.
Namco revealed that while the game will share similarities with Tekken, its gameplay will be decidedly different. The demo only depicted Lucario and Machamp going at it on a 2.5D playing field similar to the Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter x Tekken, though with Namco in charge it could well be a full 3D fighter.
For those concerned that Pokkén Tournament will never make it to these shores, the demo ended with a list of Western trademarks for the game. A Namco representative in the stream also stated that it would be “first for arcades,” which suggests that a console version is planned.
