We’ve been waiting for a new record from Canadian dance-punk legends Death From Above 1979 for a decade now, and the dry spell is nearly over with The Physical World set for a Sept. 9 release on Warner Bros (pre-order here). A rockin’ new song called “Trainwreck 1979” was debuted in July, along with a lyric video displaying the words on a series of buttons. The rock n’ roll world soaked it up in celebration.

We’re excited about the highly promising first sounds of the sequel to You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, but something stuck us oddly about the clip. A bit of research revealed that the “Trainwreck 1979” video is actually a bit of a symbolic historical scrapbook for the duo of Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler. There are lots of hidden gems throughout the clip, and some backstory to the track itself waiting to be discovered. We’ve uncovered a bunch below, and confirmed their authenticity with DFA management. There may be even more, but here’s what we’ve found so far:
1. The track was named after the Mississauga train derailment of 1979.
2. At 0:26 seconds, a nod to Femme Fatal’s album – From The Abundance of the Heart The Mouth Speaks. Femme Fatal was Jesse’s first band, and Seb briefly played live with them.
3. At 0:44 seconds, the Bad Tits logo. Bad Tits is a side project of Sebastien Grainger and Josh Reichman.
4. At 1:13, a nod to Biblical. Biblical is Nick Sewell’s band – fans will remember that Nick played with Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains, and Biblical have opened for DFA1979 – they’re good friends.
5. At 1:28, the East York Village logo
6. At 1:55, a nod to Ache Records – the band’s first label.
7. At 2:03, MSTRKRFT button, a nod to Jesse’s other band.
8. At 2:05, a clever heads-up to Ontario Mayor Hazel McCallion, the longest-serving mayor in North America.
9. At 2:12, some love for the City Of Mississauga, Sebastien’s hometown.
10. At 3:17, Montreal party rockers Tricky Woo, who may as well be spirit guides for DFA.
