E3 2014 Rumors: PS4 to Receive “Dramatic Peformance Boost”, Journey Dev to Debut New Exclusive at E3

The PS4 is already known as a powerhouse, but isn’t perfect. Some games, including the upcoming Watch Dogs, simply haven’t found the PS4 hardware fast enough to render at 1080p. But that could soon change thanks to major software developments.

Tidux, a well known leaker, has gone on record to say that Team ICE is in the process of developing some major improvements for the PS4. His Twitter post states:

Who knew ice could perform. future improvements are completely Bananas. #PS4

He regarded the performance increase as “insane”, and that it’s enough to create a much larger gap between multiplatforms on PS4 and Xbox One.

Cort Stratton, a senior programmer at ICE, shared his excitement back in March, stating, “Early results: PS4 surface tiling/detiling on the CPU is ~10-100x faster now. SIMDlicious!.” There’s definitely something in the works, and it’s just a matter of what sort of impact it’ll make.

Tidux is the same person who leaked the PS4’s operating system and user interface before it was officially debuted by Sony, so this rumor holds weight.

If all this is real, chances are we’ll hear about it during Sony’s E3 Press Conference. Speaking of which, Tidux also shared on Twitter that Flower and Journey developer ThatGameCompany will debut their new PS4 exclusive during the show.

Microsoft has been working on some software improvements of its own, and plans to release DirectX 12 on Xbox One in the near future. We’ll have to wait and see what these software packages really mean for performance for their respective hardware.
