Xbox Entertainment Studios is looking to dig up copies of the “worst game ever”, Atari’s infamous E.T. The Extra Terrestrial game, that are allegedly buried in a desert in New Mexico.
E.T. was said to have played a huge part in the video game crash of 1983, and it has been rumoured that the game sold so poorly that thousands of copies of it were buried in New Mexico by Atari.
But now the folks at Xbox look to unearth the mystery, as they’re setting out to find those mythical cartridges as part of a new documentary.
The documentary will be directed by filmmaker and writer Zak Penn, whose previous credits include The Avengers and X-Men: The Last Stand. The documentary will be sponsored by Microsoft and Lightbox.
Speaking of the project, Penn said: “When [Lightbox] approached me about this story, I knew it would be something important and fascinating. I wasn’t expecting to be handed the opportunity to uncover one of the most controversial mysteries of gaming lore.”
