Have you ever met a person who didn’t like David Bowie’s timeless hit “Heroes”? There may not be a person alive who doesn’t appreciate the rock anthem, despite the song’s use in a series of advertisements over the years. Pepsi is the latest on the bandwagon, with a twist: pop chanteuse Janelle Monáe did a large-scale production cover of the track for a new ad campaign.
Listen below to Monáe covering “Heroes,” with added synths, snap-pop drums and a whole lotta reverb. The production is a little over the top, and there’s very little legitimate soul to the cover, but hey, it’s pop. An interactive video for the cover, filmed in Rio de Janeiro with a number of soccer stars, will follow shortly. Listen below.
Monáe is no stranger to Mr. Ziggy Stardust, telling Rolling Stone that she and Bowie have a mutual reverence: “Bowie knows what’s up. He’s a fan and I’m a fan of him,” she explained. “The respect is mutual. I hear from his wife Iman that he’s a huge supporter of me, the way I dress and my music. I just hope that we made him proud.”
