New York’s prodigal rock-pop gems Semi Precious Weapons are primed to fire into the stratosphere, with a hotly anticipated new album Aviation (RedZone Records) to be released on April 22 and a featured appearance at SXSW as headliners for CraveOnline’s annual Music Showcase in Austin. The timing couldn’t be better for the band to step into the light as Crave’s featured Band of The Month for March – and today we kick off the exclusive session series with a killer performance of “Never Going Home”.
Straddling the worlds of glam and passionate rock with sequined sass, the band – singer Justin Tranter, bassist Cole Whittle, drummer Dan Crean and guitarist Stevy Pyne – recently released the four-song Aviation EP as a preview for their forthcoming third studio album (pre-order now). Produced by Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum, mega-hit maker “Tricky” Stewart (Beyoncé, Rihanna, Frank Ocean), Aviation seamlessly blends the band’s dance rock sound with Tricky’s powerful pop-edged production, in an evolution of sound that fans and radio have responded to with fevered excitement. A rich flavor of Bowie/New York Dolls-era glam godliness pervades an underlying rock-driven sound with daunting magnetism, resulting in lead single “Aviation High” becoming an inescapable radio hit, crossing through the holy trinity of pop, rock and dance markets.
As Crave’s Band of The Month featured artist for March, Semi Precious Weapons taped an exclusive studio session at Swing House in Los Angeles featuring performances of songs off the Aviation EP. Check out a studio performance of one of the EP’s standout tracks, the urgently impassioned heartgrabber “Never Going Home”.

Semi Precious Weapons formed in 2006 and released their debut album We Love You in 2008. Graduates of the Berklee College of Music, the band immediately began drawing attention for their raucously tight and famously over-the-top live shows. Garnering a cult-like fan base and hefty critical acclaim, as well as a host of celebrity followers and industry insiders along the way, the band built on their momentum with a second full length, 2010’s You Love You. The release was met with high acclaim, as well as performing for millions of people across world supporting Lady Gaga on her “The Monster Ball” tour, as well as Ke$ha’s summer “Warrior Tour” before headlining their own “Dirty Showbiz Tour” and performing at festivals from Lollapalooza to the Isle of Wight.
As promised, SPW will headline the annual CraveOnline Music Showcase during SXSW at Rusty’s in Austin, Texas on Wednesday, March 12 (RSVP here). It will be the band’s only SXSW performance, so don’t miss out!
