Alex Turner Discusses Cringeworthy BRIT Awards 2014 Speech

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has revealed the intentions behind his bite-your-knuckles cringeworthy acceptance speech at the BRIT Awards 2014.

The speech, which we detailed in our review of the thoroughly lame awards ceremony, saw Turner taking to the stage hand-on-hip in order to collect the Arctic Monkeys’ award for Best British Album, before explaining how “rock ‘n’ roll will never die” with an almost palpable air of condescension.

Speaking of the speech, Turner said to NME: “It’s not aggressive. It’s just about presenting an option that people may or may not know exists. It occurred to me that in that room, or certainly watching it on TV, were people who’d never heard the term ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ other than to describe a zip on a Topman jacket.”

Nice try, Alex, but we don’t think anyone, even the multitude of One Direction fans in the audience, confuse the rock ‘n’ roll genre with zips. Maybe next time you find yourself in a public speaking role, lay off the egotism (and the booze) a little bit.
