David Moyes is taking responsibility for Manchester United’s embarrassing 2-0 defeat against Olympiakos on Tuesday.
The manager watched from the sidelines as his team put on a pitiful display that saw the club’s Champions League hopes begin slipping through their fingers.
Moyes has faced a huge amount of criticism since taking up the post at Man U following Alex Ferguson’s departure, and Tuesday’s loss has certainly not helped him curry favour with fans.
Speaking of the defeat, the former Everton boss said: “I take responsibility. It’s my time and I always front up. It was a really poor performance. We never really got going and we didn’t deserve anything.”
He added: “I am just surprised. I didn’t see that level of performance coming, I just didn’t see it. It’s the worst we’ve played in Europe. We didn’t offer enough on the night to create a goal.
“There is undoubtedly talent at Manchester United but we didn’t show it.”
Striker Robin Van Persie put on an uncharacteristically poor display, later blaming his teammates’ positioning as the cause of his problems. He said: “Our fellow players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in. When I see that it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well.
“That forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. And unfortunately, they’re often playing in my zones. I think that’s a shame.”
The second leg of the game will take place on 19th March at Old Trafford.
