Band of The Month: Hot Karate Annihilate ‘Baby Police’ and ‘Subterranea’ (Exclusive Performance)

Crave’s celebration of our February Band of The Month Hot Karate continues today, with another installment of our exclusive studio-session performances from the progressively captivating Los Angeles rock trio.

Hot Karate’s latest album Finger Food is their third release in just three years, a continuing evolution following 2011’s self-titled LP and 2010’s Moonlight Horchata (find all three here). Driven by gut-punching passion, Hot Karate – vocalist/bassist Cyrus Ghahremani, guitarist Rob Krauss and drummer Adam Subhas – wrap their hook strength in a technical prowess that doesn’t drown us in Yes/Rush-isms while making our heads spin with kaleidoscopic variation. It’s progressive without the math-rock nerdgasms and testosterone baths of prog’s past, and melodically captivating in ways that carve a new groove in the mind of attentive listeners.

After kicking off with an adrenalized psychedelic assault with an exclusive performance of “Bolillos,”  we continued with performances of “Hot Karate” and “Diluwar” – and today we take two more trips down the rabbit-hole. As Cyrus explains, “Baby Police” takes aim at the uniformed worst of the worst in the world of “Serve and Protect,” while “Subterranea” explores the cozy concept of being buried alive – wrapped up in a complexly tremendous arrangement.

Behold, the apocalyptic groove glory of “Subterranea,” our second exclusive performance this week:
