Sex is life’s checkered finish line. It is the ticker tape at the end of a marathon, the finish flag at the end of a Mario level and the bell to sound the conclusion of the boxing match. You go to work, you earn your money, you do your sit-ups and try to eat healthy in the hope that the universe will reward you with sex.
However, despite our continuous pursuit of it, there are still a lot of things we don’t know about sex. The following sex facts we’ve listed are perhaps among those things.
Here are 15 sex facts you need to know.
10 Sex Facts You Need to Know
1. On average, female orgasms take 20 minutes
If you are the kind of selfless gentleman who wishes to give his partner an orgasm first (and if so, congratulations, you reside within the 7% of men who value the well-being of their significant others’ genitalia more than their own), then you might want to set your stop watch for 20 minutes, as that’s the average time women reach sexual satisfaction. No wonder so many complain of their partners never helping them reach it, as the average time until a male orgasm is 8-12 minutes…
2. Having a lot of sex means you'll probably get an STD
For every cloud there’s a silver lining, and for every silver lining there’s a venereal disease that makes your penis look like a banana that’s gone way past its sell-by date. Studies have shown that 80% of all sexually active adults will contract an STD at some point, though the majority will not notice. This means many of you reading this right now have an STD. So how do you prevent this from happening? Well, simply stop having sex, of course. Or wear a condom. Do what you wanna do, I’m not your mother.
3. Your diet affects the taste of your semen
You’ve likely heard this before, but have disregarded it as some false knowledge first spouted by a man who REALLY wanted his girlfriend to give him a blow job, convincing her that she should do so because he’d “been eating a lot of strawberries lately” and therefore his sperm tasted like milkshake. Weirdly, it’s completely true - a man’s diet does change the taste of his semen, for better or for worse. Eating fruit and vegetables will make the semen taste better, while drinking alcohol, caffeine or smoking makes it taste worse, as all three are pollutants.
4. Helping with the housework raises your chances of sex
Who would’ve thought it - dragging yourself out of your 1920s mindset and helping your significant other with ironing etc. will likely lead to you having more sex, as a study from the University of California shows. The results of the study indicate that men who helped their partners with chores had 50% more sex, as opposed to the men who believed that only humans in ownership of a vagina should know how to operate a vacuum cleaner.
5. More orgasms lead to a longer life...
According to the British Medical Journal, people who have more orgasms will live longer and, presumably, happier lives.
6. ...less sex leads to a smaller penis
Studies have also shown that men who aren’t getting any suffer some shrinkage. However, the studies don’t indicate whether or not “We have to have sex tonight otherwise my dick will get smaller” is an effective chat-up line.
7. The biggest sexual fantasy? Threesomes
According to studies, the biggest sexual fantasy for both men and women is engaging in a threesome, with 20% of women and 30% of men wanting to try it out. However, this is likely because threesomes are the most socially acceptable sexual fantasy - no one’s going to tell some stranger that on the weekend they like to have their testes crushed by a tall Russian woman dressed in leather, are they?
8. Work is where most sexy thoughts take place
Both men and women think about sex the most when they’re at work. This is probably to do with their minds wandering due to boredom than it is due to all those spreadsheets. Phwoar, spreadsheets.
9. The most common sex spot aside from the bed is...
...the car. Yup, sex in a car is unsurprisingly the most common “adventurous” place to have sex. Other adventurous sex spots include the foot of the bed, on the floor and France.
10. SHOCK! Foreplay will probably lead to your girlfriend orgasming
A Kinsey report noted that only 7.7% of women whose partners spend 21 minutes or longer on foreplay failed to orgasm. Let us all take a second to spare a thought for that 7.7% of men, desperately attempting to get their partner to climax with a wide array of sex toys and oral stimulation, but failing miserably. Keep at it, soldiers.
11. When you're aroused you're less likely to be grossed out
With so many bodily fluids in play and the chance that your partner might be into some alarmingly kinky shit, there's always the opportunity for something gross to happen during sex. Fortunately, when both men and women are aroused it reduces the chances of them being grossed out, thus allowing you to carry on regardless of what Lovecraftian nightmare is unfolding before you very eyes.
12. Women have a G-spot and an A-spot
Chances are you've heard of the coveted G-spot (and if you haven't, commiserations to you/your partner), but you likely haven't heard of the A-spot. Located on the front wall of the vagina just before the cervix, the A-spot gets lubricated easier than the G-spot and therefore leads to more intense orgasms.
13. No, loose vaginas aren't a "thing."
Loose vaginas are, for some reason, commonly believed to be indicative of a woman's sexual history. In reality, a woman having a "loose" vagina doesn't mean that she's had a long history of sexual partners, nor does a "tight" vagina mean the opposite. Vaginas are naturally stretchy like rubber, and for lack of a better/less disgusting term they "snap" back into place after being stimulated, with them loosening up when the woman is aroused. The vagina also becomes 30% tighter when the woman is reaching orgasm in order to increase sensitivity and pleasure, which is a pretty good deal tbh.
14. The clitoris is twice as sensitive as the penis
The clitoris has 8,000 nerve fibers, roughly twice as much as is contained in the penis. As a result it is doubly sensitive, and is the one place on a woman's body that is most likely to bring her to orgasm. Only a small percentage of women can reach orgasm without their clitoris being stimulated, so unless your penis is shaped like a hook hand then you're going to need to do double duty down there.
15. Some women can reach orgasm using their nipples alone.
1% of women can reach orgasm just by having their nipples played with, though the intensity of this orgasm differs from a vaginal orgasm. However, considering the sensitivity of the female nipple it's advisable that, unless you encounter this magical 1%, you don't spend too much time on them. Also, you'll probably look a bit weird if you do.
