One can always tell when Australia Day is approaching. The number of ridiculous lamb commercials intensifies, the weather becomes near unbearable and we’re forced to watch the Australian Open without being able to root for a half decent Aussie.
But more importantly, it’s that time of the year again when Triple J asks all Australians to make a last ditch effort to hit the polls and vote for their favourite songs of the past year as part of the broadcaster’s Hottest 100. This year, for the first time ever, a solo female artist appears set to take away the honours.
Lorde‘s massive release has been pegged as the early favourite, more specifically her single ‘Royals’ which enjoyed huge international success.
Some old favourites are also in contention to claim the Hottest 100- the Arctic Monkeys (Do I Wanna Know), Vance Joy (Riptide) and Daft Punk (Get Lucky) are all knocking about while Australia’s musically strong 2013 was confirmed with a fantastic number of home grown acts also appearing in the top 10, including Flume, The Preatures, Matt Corby, Violent Soho and Birds Of Tokyo.
The significance of Lorde’s success speaks volumes about Australia’s choice in music. It wasn’t too long ago that the influential broadcaster came under fire when last year’s Hottest 100 of the past 20 years featured few women. The 2013 poll featured just 10 women in the results with the majority of those appearing as feature artists on the selected track or part of a larger band.
According to Sportsbet, this year promises to be something different, but with voting now closed (and 1.4 million individual submissions), your chance to impact the results is now over.
