The Ten Most Awesome Smiths Covers of All Time

Song: This Charming Man

Smiths Album: The Smiths (US Version)

Taken From: Leave single B Side

Some will hate this, I love it. First off, I dig VV Brown’s voice. Second, I really like the infectious pop electronica. Taking one of The Smiths most downtrodden songs, and making it danceable without being uninteresting is quite a feat. Step away from the melancholy for one minute and dig on this awesome interpretation.

Song: The Headmaster Ritual

Smiths Album: Meat Is Murder

Taken From: Live Web Cast

Post OK Computer, I have had little need to continue listening to Radiohead. When I discovered they had a cover for “The Headmaster Ritual” in their repartee, I figured it would be an antiseptic version. One that was more in line with their later, electronic heavy recordings. I was surprised to find the band all heart and emotion. Thom Yorke delivers the vocals perfectly, but without trying to mimic the Moz.

Song: I Know It’s Over

Smiths Album: The Queen Is Dead

Taken From: 60 Real Songs From Jeff Buckley

Do I need an explanation here? If any American singer was going to pick the Smiths flag and carry on the tradition, it would be Jeff Buckley. This guy could sing the alphabet and he’d still be dreamy. A wonderful cover by a talent cut down way too early. I’ll bet even Morrissey likes this one.
