Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson’s autobiography has been named as the best-selling print book of 2013, following a series of controversies that arose from the opinions and allegations made in the tell-all memoir.
The book has shifted 647,000 copies at the time of this writing, with John Howells, PR manager of Waterstones, saying: “It looks like it’s going to be one of the biggest-selling autobiographies since records began.”
The success of the book can no doubt in large part be attributed to Ferguson’s scathing comments regarding his footballing contemporaries. In the book, he stated that Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard wasn’t “a top, top player”, to which Gerrard responded: “107 [England] caps isn’t bad for someone who isn’t “a top, top player”, is it?”
Ferguson also spoke of David Beckham’s ego in the book, saying: “David thought he was bigger than Sir Alex Ferguson. There is no doubt in my mind.” He also said how he felt that Beckham had missed out on “top level football” due to his marriage to Victoria Beckham.
