Retailer Abandons Wii U Prior to PS4 and Xbox One Releases Due to Poor Sales

The Wii U continues to be the recipient of bad news, and today’s news is a heartbreaker

According to OXCGN, Dick Smith, a popular Australian retailer, has sent out an e-mail alerting customers that Wii U consoles are 50% off, “reduced to clear”.

Despite the arrival of key releases such as Pikmin 3 and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, the Wii U continues to sell fewer units weekly than its competition. In many cases, it’s even being outsold by the Wii and previously “doomed” PS Vita.

With retailers losing hope in the Wii U being worth its real estate on the shelf, more companies could follow suit. Nintendo has tried to price to sell with a The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD Wii U Limited Edition Bundle for $299.99, but consoles still aren’t moving as Nintendo anticipated.

The problem with the Wii U versus other consoles that have faced challenges—such as the PS3—is it has more than just one problem. While some say it’s too pricey for what you get and doesn’t have many worthwhile games, its name and tablet controller all put it at a significant disadvantage heading into this holiday season.

Then again, it’s $100 cheaper than the PS4 which makes it an easier pick-up for holiday gifts. This show isn’t over, yet.
