A full-on “Soul Train” revival is in effect for Daft Punk and the video for their latest single, “Lose Yourself to Dance”. The dynamic French-robot duo are joined by Pharrell Williams and Rick James Nile Rodgers on an elevated platform, dressed like glittery cocaine cowboys under a vaseline-rubbed lens.
It was supposed to be a joke, but disco is apparently back, and though I excitedly reviewed Random Access Memories, the good things about “Lose Yourself to Dance” are squashed out by a visual that’s just too damn close to authentic late-70s spaceship discoteque sleaze to feel good about.
This is novel fun and all, but let’s not go any further down the mirror-ball path. Please.
