Wii U Pushes 160K Units in 3 Months, Is On The Verge of Disaster

According to GamesIndustry.biz, the Wii U has sold 160,000 units in the past three months, a 59% drop from the 390,000 sold during the length of February, March, and April. Nintendo has continued to fall short on its projected sales, meaning it’s just as surprised as consumers are.

For comparison’s sake, 160,000 is almost how much the 3DS and PS3 sell on any given week, even during summer months, when sales are at their crashing point.

The Wii U has been in turbulence since its debut last year, but the story is far worse than previously imagined. The console has regularly been outsold by the PlayStation Vita, the previous struggler of the pack.  Both are challenged by price points that are considered too high for the value, and less-than-stellar game libraries.

Nintendo just launched Pikmin 3 which increased sales in Japan, but one game won’t be enough. It’s going to take several blockbuster exclusives, and a serious price drop to make the console competitive going forward.
