Amy Winehouse’s ex-husband has revealed how he introduced the deceased singer to hard drugs.
Blake Fielder-Civil, Winehouse’s husband of two years, told talk show host Jeremy Kyle on the latter’s ITV show that he now regrets introducing her to heroin, but insisted that the majority of their relationship was not spent under the influence of the substance.
Fielder-Civil said: “Out of maybe a six or seven-year relationship that me and Amy had on and off, there was drug use for about four months together.”
He continued: “We used heroin together as addicts for like four months, then I went to jail. Then it got a lot worse while I was in jail and then when I came out of jail I was told that if I loved her I’d divorce her and set her free and I did.”
Winehouse died in July 2011, with a second inquest found last month revealing that she had died from alcohol poisoning. She was 27 years old. 34-year-old Fielder-Civil said how he had divorced Winehouse following pressure from both his and her family to do so, who recognised that the pair had a negative influence on each others well-being. Speaking about a conversation he had with Winehouse’s father, Mitch, he said: “He said if you love her really you’ll divorce her. I spoke to Amy about it and we sort of agreed that it would get everyone off our backs at least you know and we’d probably remarry.”
Fielder-Civil, who was in jail when Winehouse died, recalled the moment he heard the news, saying that he had to convince the senior prison staff to show him a multitude of websites, as he initially believed it was an internet hoax. “I made them show me about six or seven websites and each time they showed me the computer, I’m finding it harder and harder to say no”, he told Kyle. “Eventually I think they got the BBC up and they updated it.”
