Anna Silk Talks “Lost Girl”

Anna Silk, who hails from Fredericton, New Brunswick, plays the sexy lead role on the successful Showcase series “Lost Girl,” which is kicking off its second season in just a few days. She has also had various roles on other great shows including “The Ghost Whisperer,” “Republic of Doyle,” and “Being Erica,” a role for which she was honoured with a 2010 Gemini Award nomination. On the upcoming season of “Lost Girl,” Silk reprises her role as “Bo,” the tough yet loveable Succubus who survives by feeding off sexual energy. “Lost Girl” is Showcase’s number-one original series in the channel’s history and was recently picked up by Syfy Channel in the U.S.

“Lost Girl” returns for a highly-anticipated second season on Sunday, September 4 at 9pm. Here’s what Silk had to say about her adoration for strong female lead characters and what superpower she wishes she could embody.

CraveOnline: What can viewers expect to see from Bo and “Lost Girl” for the second season?

Anna Silk: What fans saw toward the end of last season were a few cliff-hangers – Bo had been looking for and found her mother and had a big battle in the last episode. The biggest cliff-hanger was between Bo and Dyson after he helps her in her final battle against her mother. Season 2 picks up not too long after season 1 ends and we see the aftermath very early on of these cliff-hangers.

There are lots of twists and turns, and some new dangers on the horizon for Bo, so she has to be ready for those.

CraveOnline: What does it mean to you being the star of a network’s number-one show?

Anna Silk: It’s amazing. We made season 1 knowing it was a unique show and hoping it would resonate with people and it has. I went to ComiCon and there was quite a big response – fans have seen it and embraced it. We did the Fan Expo here too and it was pretty crazy.

CraveOnline: Have you always been a fan of sci-fi?

Anna Silk: I wouldn’t say I was a big fan – it wasn’t that I didn’t like it but I was a fan of all kinds of stuff. I’m always drawn to strong female leads so that’s what drew me to “Lost Girl.” I was a “Buffy” fan and watched it with friends every week. I was also a big fan of “Alias” when that was on – they both had strong female leads and that’s what draws me in the most.

I had a book about fairies when I was child too and I was quite fascinated by it (“Faeries“). The images were very sinister but very intriguing.

CraveOnline: If you could have any one super power, what would it be and why?

Anna Silk: I like being a Succubus – that’s a very cool power. But I guess I would love the ability to shift into an animal, like Kris’ power to turn into a wolf. I love cats so maybe a giant cat like a tiger.

CraveOnline: Do you have any other projects in the pipeline?

Anna Silk: I did some stuff in-between seasons 1 and 2, like an episode of “Republic of Doyle,” and I did an independent film called “Stacking Chips” a few years ago that should be coming out soon – it’s about three mobsters and I play one of them. But for the most part, “Lost Girl” takes up all of my time, especially this year with 22 episodes. It’s a good 8-9 months of shooting but I’m pleased. I love it.

CraveOnline: You’ve lived in LA for a number of years but were raised in Fredericton… do you miss Canada?

Anna Silk: I go to New Brunswick once if not twice a year. I definitely miss it. But I do love living in LA – I’m lucky because I get a little bit of everything.

CraveOnline: Would you consider moving back?

Anna Silk: There are a lot of new opportunities in LA at the moment, but there’s a lot of stuff happening in Toronto again too – it’s really booming. I guess I’ll just see where the work takes me. I went to LA at a time when Toronto was still recovering from a slow slump and things are really happening now – there’s so much interesting stuff in Canadian TV so I wouldn’t rule it out.

CraveOnline: Who is your role model, either personally or professionally?

Anna Silk: I don’t know if I have one specific role model. I think professionally I admire people and the way they’ve handled their careers and being in the media. But the people that I used to inspire me and keep me going were my peers in Toronto – I would see the same girls going to audition after audition, and their resilience to do it again, and I found that inspiring. Eventually some got a break or some didn’t but they kept trying just as hard.

CraveOnline: What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?

Anna Silk: (Laughs) It’s hard to know what people think of me in the first place! One thing people always say when they meet me is I’m not really tall – they think Bo is tall for some reason. I’m not particularly short but I’m not as tall as their expectations.

I also keep a healthy regiment – I went vegan before filming this season and I feel really great. Otherwise I just hang out with my husband a lot and my friends and family… nothing too crazy!
