A lot of people call Cherry 2000 one of their favorite ‘bad movies.’ We don’t. Cherry 2000 is an actual, honest to God ‘good movie’ that capitalized on the post-Road Warrior post-apocalyptic craze with wit, aplomb and genuinely interesting ideas. Now, the Melanie Griffith vehicle with all the vehicles in it (it’s a Road Warrior knock-off, after all) could be the next movie on Hollywood’s ridiculously full remake slate.
Showbiz 411 has revealed that producer Edward R. Pressman, who previously brought us such films as American Psycho, The Crow and the original Cherry 2000, is ‘talking remake.’ They don’t into much more detail than that, so we should probably include this in the Rumor Mill for now, but Melanie Griffith is pretty pumped for the production, in which she would reportedly like her own daughter, actress Dakota Johnson (The Social Network) to reprise Griffith’s original role.
Cherry 2000 took place in the near future, after a global disaster has crushed the economy and all romantic relationships begin – even at a singles bar – with contract agreements arranged by attorneys. As such, some people – like our hero, Sam Treadwell (David Andrews) – prefer the company of lifelike sexbots to actual members of the opposite sex. When Sam’s favorite model, a ‘Cherry 2000,’ breaks down he has to hire a bounty hunter named E. Johnson (Griffith) to help him track down a replacement model deep in the post-apocalyptic wastelands. Along the way they run afoul of a group of militant self-actualization enthusiasts led by the inimitable Tim Thomerson. Say what you will about Cherry 2000, but at least it’s different.
