Champions: Young Avengers Series Reportedly Taps Shrinking Writer

Champions will reportedly focus on Marvel’s younger heroes, with Rachna Fruchbom set to write the series, according to recent reports. While unconfirmed by Marvel Studios, speculation follows ongoing rumors of a merged Young Avengers and Champions lineup and builds on hints from The Marvels’ post-credits scene.

According to Nexus Point News, Rachna Fruchbom is also expected to serve as showrunner and executive producer.

The project centers on Marvel’s younger heroes and was first reported by X (formerly Twitter) user @ApocHorseman, who revealed that the MCU is developing a series titled Champions rather than a traditional Young Avengers project.

The MCU has introduced several young characters in recent years. These include Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, America Chavez, Riri Williams, Billy Maximoff, and Eli Bradley. Audiences generally view these heroes as candidates for the Young Avengers or Champions lineups.

Marvel Studios reportedly chose the name Champions to set the series apart from the Avengers brand. This decision followed The Marvels’ box office struggles and concerns about some cast members aging out of their roles.

In the comics, Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung launched the Young Avengers in 2005 with a core lineup that included Iron Lad, Wiccan, Hulkling, and Patriot. Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos created the Champions in 2016, introducing a separate team that featured Ms. Marvel, Nova, Ironheart, and a time-displaced Cyclops. The MCU series currently in development appears to combine characters from both teams into a single ensemble.

Rachna Fruchbom is writing and executive producing Season 3 of Shrinking on Apple TV+ and has previously served as a writer and producer on And Just Like That…, Fresh Off the Boat, and Parks and Recreation. UTA represents her.

Marvel Studios reportedly plans to continue developing Champions into 2026, with filming expected to begin after Avengers: Secret Wars wraps. According to Marvel Television executive Brad Winderbaum, the series may debut on Disney+ in 2028 and could grow its roster in future seasons.
