Snow White’s Box Office Underperforms in Its Opening Weekend

With Snow White now in theaters, its box office performance has quickly become a topic of industry focus. The live-action remake arrived with high expectations and significant attention, both from audiences and analysts. As it continues its theatrical run, questions remain about how the film will perform in the coming weeks amid shifting audience interest and broader market trends.

Snow White’s box office starts with $87 million+ globally

Disney’s Snow White opened to $43 million domestically and $87.3 million globally (via Box Office Mojo).

The film had a production budget of $270 million and faced several setbacks. These included the actors strike, COVID-related delays, and a set fire. Its Thursday preview total was $3.5 million.

It drew 3.1 million moviegoers in North America, according to EntTelligence. This attendance was similar to Wonka (3M attendees, $39M opening) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (3.3M, $45M).

Snow White’s domestic performance was similar to other underperforming Disney live-action titles like Dumbo ($46M). It was well below The Little Mermaid ($95.5M), Maleficent ($69.4M), and Cinderella ($67.8M).

Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak reported that 38% of viewers attended because “it looked fun.” Another 32% cited interest in the Disney princess genre. Only 21% attended because of Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.

Snow White received a B+ CinemaScore, a lower grade than other Disney reimaginings such as Dumbo (A-), Pete’s Dragon (A), and Maleficent (A). The film scored 74% on Rotten Tomatoes from audiences, with critics giving it a 44%.

Social media analytics firm RelishMix found 534 million total followers across major platforms and reported a 31:1 strong viral rate. However, negative chatter concentrated on the CGI dwarves and casting choices, with one user saying, “Those CGI dwarves were awful! Nightmare fuel!”

The film’s audience skewed 68% female, with 24% aged 18–24 and 23% aged 25–34. Diversity demographics included 45% Caucasian, 25% Latino/Hispanic, 12% Black, and 11% Asian viewers (via Deadline). AMC Disney Springs in Florida was the film’s top-performing location, earning $135,200 through Saturday. IMAX earnings were $2.8M from 398 screens.
