9-1-1’s Ryan Guzman Reveals Reason Why Eddie Is Leaving for Texas

Actor Ryan Guzman, who portrays Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz in the procedural drama series 9-1-1, explained in a new interview why his character is leaving Los Angeles in the show. In 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 10, it was disclosed that Eddie would be departing for Texas, which led to an emotional scene featuring him and his best friend Buck (Oliver Stark).

Ryan Guzman confirms Eddie’s motivation to move in 9-1-1

Guzman revealed in a recent interview with TheWrap that Eddie was leaving Los Angeles for Texas for his son, Christopher. He said, “As far as Eddie goes, Eddie has got one thing on his mind and one thing only, and that’s salvaging the relationship between him and his son. And then stepping back into the role of being a father and not allowing his parents to do too much of that for him.”

When asked how Eddie’s relationship with Christopher would be once the former got back to Texas, Guzman noted that there had been “some breakthroughs” and that Eddie now sometimes got his son to smile and talk to him. The actor called it “progression” before adding, “So when he comes back to Texas, he isn’t having to fight off this memory of Christopher just thinking about the ghost of his dead mother. It’s more reintegrating his life with Christopher and showing that he can be the dad he promised.”

Notably, Christopher’s mother is Shannon Diaz. Guzman’s Eddie was deployed to Afghanistan but came home when Christopher was born. At some point, Christopher was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. After his mother left and Eddie began doing various jobs, Christopher started living with his paternal grandparents. When Eddie secured the job as a first responder in Los Angeles, Christopher relocated to the city with him.

Earlier this month, series co-creator Tim Minear teased Eddie’s potential return to Los Angeles during an interview with Decider. However, he stated that a part of the narrative would follow Eddie to Texas and explore his dynamics with Christopher and others.
