In an exclusive interview with The Direct, Kristian Ventura, who plays Simon in School Spirits, explains why Simon can see Maddie’s spirit in the afterlife. He attributes their rare connection to a deep bond of loyalty and love.
Ventura stated, “It comes down to the types of love that are out there… the kind of love where you let loyalty decide the day for you.” He elaborated, describing moments where Simon demonstrates unwavering loyalty to Maddie, such as when he charges into danger without hesitation. “There’s a twin flame,” Ventura added, emphasizing their deep, inseparable connection.
Simon and Maddie’s backstory reveals their early friendship, which early drafts of the series depicted. Ventura explained, “She saw a book that he was reading, and…they just connect like that.” He continued, “Maddie had such a good heart that the only person who wanted to talk to him was her.” Their bond began with a simple agreement, “You’re my friend,” and remained unbroken over time.
In the School Spirits Season 2 finale, Simon desperately tries to stop anyone from moving Maddie’s body. He knows that if her soul doesn’t return, she will be lost. Ventura reflected on Simon’s emotional state, saying, “If Maddie never got her body back, Season 3 would still end up with Simon in the afterlife because the dude would off himself.” This highlights Simon’s deep dependence on Maddie.
Ventura also recalled filming the scene where Simon holds Maddie’s body, noting that he originally pushed for a more intense performance. “I wanted to take it there. They didn’t let me,” he stated.
