CBS recently canceled S.W.A.T. and confirmed that Season 8 will be its last, ending the show’s long run of renewals and reversals. The network made this decision after unexpectedly extending the series for an eighth season in 2024. Meanwhile, discussions continue about the cancellation, the show’s impact, and its place in CBS’s shifting lineup.
SWAT Season 8 to end the series as CBS cancels the show again
In May 2024, CBS unexpectedly extended S.W.A.T. for an eighth season (via Deadline). Now, the network has decided to end the series permanently.
For two years, S.W.A.T. secured last-minute renewals as Sony Pictures Television negotiated financial terms with CBS. This time, CBS did not enter renewal talks and instead chose to conclude the series.
CBS first canceled the police drama, starring Shemar Moore, in May 2023 after six seasons. The network later reversed the decision, renewing it for a seventh season. Ultimately, CBS chose to end the series after Season 8.
The cancellation follows CBS’s recent decisions to end FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. All three shows are produced by outside studios (Sony TV and Universal Television). CBS has already filled next season’s drama slots with Sheriff Country and Boston Blue. The network is also developing potential FBI and Equalizer spinoffs.
SWAT showrunner on latest cancellation
Executive producer and showrunner Andrew Dettmann described the cancellation as “heartbreaking,” stating, “It’s been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we’ve always been proud of. They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges” (via Deadline).
Former showrunner and executive producer Shawn Ryan said, “It’s been an extraordinary privilege to work on SWAT for eight seasons and tell the stories of Hondo and 20-Squad. I thank our fans, Shemar Moore, the rest of our cast, our producers, Sony Pictures Television, CBS Studios, and CBS for the opportunity.”
CBS’s decision comes as Skydance prepares to acquire Paramount Global, its parent company. The companies expect to close the deal in the first half of the year.
