DreamWorks Animation is reportedly developing Shrek 5 as a multiverse movie. While the studio has not officially confirmed this, insider sources suggest the film will explore alternate dimensions. As anticipation builds for the next installment in the Shrek franchise, speculation about its storyline and potential crossovers continues to grow.
Zendaya-led Shrek 5 rumored to involve the multiverse in a unique way
Shrek 5 is rumored to be a multiverse film, according to online scooper MyTimeToShineHello. On February 21, 2025, their X (formerly Twitter) account posted, “SHREK 5 is a multiverse movie (kinda).” A follow-up post on February 28 stated, “Just wait till you hear what Shrek 5 is actually about and how the ‘multiverse’ plays a part in it. It’s SHOCKING.” Another post on the same day claimed, “The movie follows Shrek’s daughter, Shrek himself, and Donkey on a journey to another dimension!”
This rumored storyline brings alternate dimensions into the Shrek universe. This would mirror recent superhero films and shows that have used multiversal narratives. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), The Flash (2023), and Invincible Season 2 explore different realities. Characters meet alternate versions of themselves or interact with other universes. As MyTimeToShineHello downplayed Shrek 5’s multiverse aspect a little by adding “kinda,” the specifics of how the film will incorporate it remain unclear.
Speculation has emerged among fans about potential crossovers with other DreamWorks franchises. A user on Reddit’s r/Shrek forum asked, “Wasn’t Shrek 4 already kind of a multiverse movie?” referencing Shrek Forever After (2010). This sequel featured an alternate reality created by Rumpelstiltskin’s magic. Another fan on Threads suggested, “If they end up in the ocean and we get a Shark Tale cameo, I’d be GONE.” Others have proposed appearances from the Trolls universe or other DreamWorks properties.
DreamWorks has not confirmed Shrek 5’s multiversal storyline. Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon will direct the film. It is currently set for a theatrical release on December 23, 2026. The sequel’s confirmed cast includes Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Zendaya.
