Primetime Emmy winner Anna Sawai, who portrays schoolteacher Cate Randa in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, has teased the deaths and returns of different characters in the upcoming Season 2 of the show. Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the series is based on Toho Co., Ltd’s Godzilla and is part of Legendary’s Monsterverse.
Anna Sawai’s on what to expect from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2
Sawai recently said that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters would “lose some people” and “find some people” in Season 2. The actress made the comment in the press room after she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role in Shōgun.
“I don’t know if I’m allowed to tease anything at this point, but I can say we go on a huge journey,” Sawai said. “We’ll go in different directions, we lose some people, we find some people… I think that’s kind of it. But it’s very exciting,” she added. (via Screen Rant)
Sawai’s comment, while somewhat cryptic, does indicate that the viewers can expect an eventful second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which will potentially include multiple deaths and returns. Notably, Wyatt and Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw seemingly died in Season 1. Bruce Baek’s Du-Ho also perished in the inaugural season.
The series debuted on Apple TV+ on November 17, 2023. The first season comprises 10 episodes, which finished airing on January 12, 2024. Three months later, Apple greenlit the sophomore season, the production for which had already commenced by late July 2024. Filming concluded in February 2025.
As previously mentioned, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is part of Monsterverse. It’s the sixth overall entry in the franchise after movies Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong, and the Netflix animated series Skull Island. The 2024 feature Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire came out after Monarch: The Legacy of Monsters. Further, a follow-up to The New Empire is currently in development.
