Industry scoopers are claiming that Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. would continue to be part of the DC Universe after Peacemaker Season 2 and would appear in the spin-off series, Waller. The character made his first appearance in the franchise in an animated form in Creature Commandos. Flag Sr. would also be appearing in the upcoming Superman movie.
Frank Grillo could be back in DC’s Waller series after Peacemaker Season 2
Renowned internet scooper @MyTimeToShineHello has claimed that Frank Grillo would appear as Rick Flag Sr. in Waller.
“I hear Frank Grillo will be back for the Waller show as Rick Flag,” the scooper posted on X(formerly Twitter). The series in question is in development at DC Studios. It will reportedly continue the story of Amanda Waller and the team surrounding the Peacemaker. Moreover, Academy Award-winner Viola Davis is slated to reprise her role as the eponymous character from previous projects. In addition, Steve Agee would also return as John Economos.
The prospect of Flag Sr. appearing in Waller makes sense, given his connection with other characters on that side of the DCU. The said connection will likely be fleshed out further in Peacemaker Season 2.
This iteration of Rick Flag Sr. is a contemporary general. He serves as the leader of the titular team in Creature Commandos. In a November 2024 interview with Collider, DCU co-head James Gunn teased the antagonistic dynamic between Flag Sr. John Cena’s Christopher Smith / Peacemaker in the second season.
“We know that Rick Flag Sr. is angry because his son was killed by Peacemaker, so we know that situation happened in the past, we have something to refer to to think of what it might be like that that happened, but that exists as canon because it was mentioned in Creature Commandos, not necessarily because it existed in Suicide Squad,” Gunn explained. This also clarifies how Flag Jr’s death would continue to impact the DCU storyline going forward.
Notably, Waller was slated to come out in 2024 but got delayed because of 2023 Hollywood strikes. As things stand now, it will come out after the second season of Peacemaker.
