Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 Gets Praised in First Reactions, Critics Call It a ‘Riot’

The first reactions to the Bong Joon-ho-directed Mickey 17 are finally in, with most of the reviewers showering the film as well as Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo’s performances with praise. The science-fiction black comedy revolves around Mickey Barnes, who agrees to become an expendable clone worker in an earthly expedition to Niflheim. The harsh conditions of the ice world result in him dying on multiple occasions before returning to life in a new body with most of his memories intact. Inspired by Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel, Mickey7, the movie seems to have already become a critical darling.

Mickey 17’s first reactions praise Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo’s performances

Mickey 17, which serves as Bong Joon-ho’s first directorial venture since 2019’s Parasite, has drawn overly favorable reactions following its recent London premiere. While most critics lauded the South Korean filmmaker for his clever use of social commentary, many commended Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo for elevating the project with their masterful performances.

As one of the first reviewers of the film, Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes-affiliated critic Erik Davis stated in his reaction, “Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 is an absolute riot and Robert Pattinson further proves why he is one of the best, most versatile actors working today.” He also eulogized Mark Ruffalo’s acting chops in the film before concluding his account by saying, “A definite recommend, especially fans of big, smart, nutty sci-fi.”

Furthermore, SlashFilm’s BJ Colangelo went as far as to label Mickey 17 as a “masterpiece” and “Bong’s best English-language film yet.” She described the film as “a deeply heartfelt and uncomfortably funny musing on capitalism, colonization, and corruption with a sublime cast.”

Meanwhile, Emily Murray of GamesRadar+ and SFX focused her first reaction to Mickey 17 on the film’s cast, noting that viewers will “fall for Robert Pattinson’s brilliant performance, with Mark Ruffalo’s sleazy politician being a highlight too.”

Mickey 17’s positive first reactions come from the project’s premiere in London, with the movie set to hit US theatres on March 7, 2025.
