Chris Pine is reportedly being considered for the lead role in Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, directed by Patty Jenkins. The film, first announced in 2020, aims to introduce “a new generation of starfighter pilots” in a boundary-pushing storyline. Development resumed after Jenkins re-engaged with Lucasfilm in 2022, with the project still in its drafting phase. Further details about casting and release remain unconfirmed.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron rumored to reunite Chris Pine with Patty Jenkins
Chris Pine is reportedly being considered for the lead role in Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, a film directed by Patty Jenkins. Industry insider MyTimeToShineHello shared on X (formerly Twitter), “Chris Pine eyed for lead in the movie Star Wars: Rogue Squadron that is back in development.” Pine previously worked with Jenkins on Wonder Woman and its sequel, leading to discussions about their potential reunion.
Jenkins confirmed her return to Rogue Squadron during an interview on the Talking Pictures Podcast. “When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,’” she explained.
After shelving Wonder Woman 3, Jenkins finalized a new deal with Lucasfilm. “I now owe a draft of Star Wars. So we will see what happens there,” she said, adding, “We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”
The project was first announced in December 2020. It was described as introducing “a new generation of starfighter pilots” in a “high-speed thrill-ride” and aimed to move the Star Wars saga into a future era. Development reportedly paused in 2021 due to Jenkins’ other commitments.
After leaving Wonder Woman 3 in 2022, Jenkins resumed work on Rogue Squadron. In April 2023, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated the project was under discussion (via The Playlist). She also mentioned it might be reimagined as a TV series.
Lucasfilm has faced challenges finalizing a theatrical release since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The next Star Wars film, featuring Grogu and the Mandalorian, will release on May 22, 2026.
