Charlize Theron-Led The Old Guard 2’s Release Date Reportedly Delayed

The Old Guard premiered on Netflix on July 10, 2020, and garnered mostly positive reviews. Conversations about a potential sequel have been around since the release of the first movie as its mid-credits scene teases that the story might continue. In 2021, various outlets reported that Netflix was going forward with The Old Guard 2. However, if the recent reports about The Old Guard 2’s release date are true, fans might have to wait a while before the return of Charlize Theron’s Andromache ‘Andy’ of Scythia and her group of immortal warriors.

The Old Guard 2 heads for more reshoots in ‘early summer’

A recent report from World of Reels claims that The Old Guard 2 would undergo additional photography, probably this summer, which means that the much-anticipated sequel will not get a release date anytime soon. This comes after an earlier report from What’s on Netflix, which cited the Union of British Columbia Performers (UBCP/ACTRA) to report that the production was slated to undergo additional filming in October 2024.

Notably, filming for The Old Guard 2 began in June 2022 and concluded in September of that year. In a July 2024 interview with Variety, Theron revealed that Netflix had shut down post-production. “Netflix went through quite a changeover,” the Oscar-winner said at the time. “We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it.”

Theron continued, “They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it.”

The Old Guard is an adaptation of the series of graphic novels of the same name by Greg Rucka, who wrote the screenplays for the movie and its sequel. Rucka also published a sequel to his original comic series titled The Old Guard: Force Multiplied. The first movie was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood while Victoria Mahoney helmed the sequel. Uma Thurman and Henry Golding joined the returning cast of Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Vân Veronica Ngô, and more in the sequel.
